Austell-Puckett EMS in Austell has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services for its compliance with national standards of excellence. Puckett EMS became the 158th ambulance service in the country to successfully complete the voluntary review process which included completion of a comprehensive application and on-site review by national experts in emergency medical services (EMS). With this achievement, Puckett EMS becomes the fourth ambulance service to be accredited in the state of Georgia.
The Commission is a non-profit organization which was established to encourage and promote quality patient care in America’s medical transportation system. The primary focus of the Commission’s standards is high-quality patient care. This is accomplished by establishing national standards which not only address the delivery of patient care, but also the ambulance service’s total operation and its relationships with other agencies, the general public, and the medical community. The Commission’s standards often exceed state or local licensing requirements.
Steve Puckett said accreditation “represents our firm commitment to our patients and community. We continuously strive to do our best and we viewed accreditation as another step toward excellence.”
“Our staff has been key to our successful completion of the process. I think it gives the feeling of prestige and pride to work in an accredited ambulance service,” said Steve Puckett. “Everyone here played a valuable role in our ability to meet the Commission’s high standards. We have achieved accreditation but I believe it can only be a stimulus for continued improvement.”

Puckett EMS crew recognized for life-saving actions
Puckett EMS Unit 323
Agency: Puckett EMS and Cobb County Fire & Emergency
Services
Nominated by: Christy Rollins, RN
Jeff Biddy, Stephen Hill and Jonathan Konecny are nominated their life-saving actions on April 26, 2008 at Lost Mountain Park.
That afternoon, Puckett EMS Unit 323 and the Cobb County Fire Department Engine 13B were dispatched to the park in response to a man in full cardiac arrest. En route, they learned that a bystander was performing CPR on the fallen man. When they arrived on the scene, off-duty firefighter Jeff Biddy informed them that the patient was without a pulse and was not breathing. Biddy instructed one of the bystanders to quickly obtain a defibrillator while he and Amy Tipton, a register nurse who was also in the bleachers that day, performed CPR on the victim. Biddy charged the defibrillator and shocked him twice before his heartbeat returned. Paramedic Konecny and EMT Hill then took over the patient's care. The 70-year-old man was immediately prepared for an emergency transport to WellStar Cobb Hospital.
This patient's prognosis was grim - most cardiac arrest victims don't survive and if they do, they typically remain in a vegetative state. However, because of Biddy, Konecny and Hill's quick response to this emergency, the patient survived and made a full recovery.
